Much of human thought is shaped not by logic, but by instinctive shortcuts that feel effortless and convincing. According to psychologist Daniel Kahneman, our minds operate through two systems: System 1, which is intuitive and automatic, and System 2, which is rational and effortful. While we like to believe that we reason our way through decisions, in reality, we often rely on mental shortcuts—heuristics—that allow us to make judgments quickly but imprecisely. These intuitive processes often create an illusion of coherence: our minds tell a story that feels consistent, even if the logic is flawed or the evidence weak. Anchoring, confirmation bias, and overconfidence emerge from this tendency, with System 2 acting less as a critical judge and more as a rationalizing lawyer, selectively justifying what System 1 has already decided. The more confident we feel in our thinking, the more likely it is that we’ve overlooked uncertainty and ignored alternative views. Thus, rationality is not the default but a corrective effort, one that requires awareness and intention. The uncomfortable truth is that many of our most confident beliefs may not be the result of rigorous thought, but of persuasive storytelling by our own minds. In this light, we come to recognize that __________________________.
