People tend to think of memory as something like a recording — a fixed account of what happened that can be played back when needed. Research in cognitive neuroscience tells a different story. Remembering is not retrieval but construction. Each time a past event comes to mind, the brain pieces it back together from fragments: sensory impressions, feelings at the time, and things learned afterward. Because the pieces are reassembled rather than replayed, the result is easily shaped by what a person has come to know or believe since the original experience. Post-event information slips into recollection without announcement, and suggestions from others can settle into memory as though they were one's own. Courts have long treated this as a problem, and for good reason — a witness who unknowingly rewrites what they saw is a serious liability. Yet evolutionary psychologists point out that the same feature driving this weakness is also what makes a particular human strength possible. A mind that can take apart a memory and put it back together in new combinations is not limited to rehearsing the past. It can borrow elements from different experiences and arrange them into scenes that have never occurred. The unreliability of memory, then, is less a flaw to be corrected than the unavoidable cost of being able to ______________________.
